Well...
Sosa:  755 OPS
Wilk:  751 OPS

Wilk has struck out once every 3.7 plate appearances this season.

Sosa has struck out once every 3.7 plate appearances this season.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2007 10:15 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes and yes
Not sure why his salary would impact whether or not you'd release him ahead of Sosa, though.

If anything, you'd want to hold Wilkerson a little longer, since if you could trade him to someone else in July, you'd save about $2 million versus releasing him.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2007 10:18 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Neither is the future
But I think you could get a useful player for Sosa instead of just releasing him.

surely
in your wildest dreams you dont think that the Rangers would cut Sammy?

Not offering my opinion here on Sammy the player, just stating that Dean Palmer will make a comeback before the Rangers release Sosa.

Maybe we can make a deal at the deadline and get Oil Can Boyd in here!

I agree
if we don't finding a trading partner for Sosa he'll probably be here all year.  Unless of course he completely falls off the map.

I have no problem with that
so longas he's the righty side of strict lefty/righty platoon in LF with the Cat.

If he stays up all year clogging the DH spot... then I'ma get mad.

I know
that statheads completely dismiss the RBI stat, but you have to admit there's something to that.  That's not completely luck.  The guy does drive in a lot more runs.  He, overall, has a lot better at bats when runners are on.
Chris Young/Adrian Gonzalez for Aki Otsuka, the new Sammy Sosa/Wilson Alvarez for Harold Baines

by badradiorules on Jun 21, 2007 10:11 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes, he's hit pretty well with RISP, but
he's also had more chances for an RBI than Wilky and many others on the club.  You can't use only a counting stat to judge a player.  Wilkerson has only had 47 at bats with runners on, and Sosa has 121.  He damn well better have more RBI than Wilkerson.

by t ball on Jun 21, 2007 12:01 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Why?
His BA is slightly lower than Sosa's, his OBP is higher, and their SLG is about the same.  At least Wilkerson adds a little value defensively with Teixeira out.

Sosa also strikes out more often than the guy you call the whiffing machine.

But Sosa was pulled off the scrap heap and Wilkerson is what we have to show for trading away one of the best players in the history of the game.

I know that is no fault of Wilk's, but it just hurts to turn ARod to Sori to Wilk.

thats the rangers for you
should have told him to stay and play OF or go to hell - its not like he can hold out (sori).

equally should have kept arod. plain and simple.

and look at the players on their own

wilkerson.

sosa.

dont look at wilkerson<--sori<--arod

dont look at alvarez/sosa-->baines-->etc-->sosa

look at them on their own.

Sosa may strike out more but hes also hit..
600 Home Runs ..sluggers like that strike out a lot..simple as that..hes one of the top 5 sluggers EVER.. Wilk a slugger?  thats laughable..he doesnt have many home runs and not many RBI's and sucks in the clutch..as well..

4 straight 50 home run seasons
(3 of which are 60 home run seasons) will do that for you.

what stopped bonds from doing that was the fact that he was initially a leadoff speedster guy getting 19-22 homers a season...but since 1992 he has been a god.

Sammy Hate Turns one Web Poster away
I have not posted in a while mostly becuase I have been too busy.  However, I have not posted as well becuase of the Hate from Adam with regards to Sosa.

This Rangers season has been a total disaster and it is hard watching game after game.  However, I have at least caught most games (even if only for a few innings) and honestly I care to see Sammy play.  I wanted to see HR 600.  I wanted to see it at home and wanted to see the smile on his face.

Yes, yes I want to see young players I want to see the future, I want to see and be given a reason to think the future is bright but you know what I also want to be given a reason to watch right now.  Sammy gives us that reason.  He is making history.  He is only the 5th player every to hit 600.  Yeah, he probably used the juice but then again so did many players of his generation.  Does not make it right but it is what it is...but he is still making history and makes watching enjoyable.

I have been completely turned off of this site by the Posts and comments by Adam in regards to Sosa.  no, he is not our future but he is on this team and I support him 100%.  Daniels and Hicks picked him for the team and if you support at least Daniels (as I do) then you support this decision.  Also I hate hearing the "we should see what Botts can do" argument.  Granted the guy has not had much chance to prove himself at this level but if Management (i.e. Daniels and others in the Minor league level that would help Daniels evaulate Botts) were high on his ability he would be here.  He is not and I don't think the reaason is 100% becuase Sosa is here for publicity reasons.  I think partly becuase some think Botts can't get it done here and honestly I trust the judgement of the scouts and Daniels much mroe than I do of Adam.

This is a rant no doubt and this site is very popular entirely becuase of the hard work and long hours put in by Adam and others but the Hate on Sammy (a current player) has turned at least one person off of this site.

by simbaa on Jun 20, 2007 10:06 PM CDT   0 recs

Keep the Sammy hate
With the love fest going on almost everywhere else regarding Sammy it's nice to see at least one place where he is called out for being what he is and that's a below average baseball player.

Oh, and he's a scumbag too but nobody seems to care about that since his jersey says Rangers across the chest.

Scumbag
He's a blatant cheater and fraud.  The corked bat and the "me no speak the English" show he put on in front of Congress are what make him a scumbag in my opinion.  I have a strong suspicion that many here would share that opinion if he played for the Angels.

some of your favorite players are scumbags then
i guarentee players you liked and still like from the 90s were steroid abusers.

just because sosa hit 600 homeruns doesnt make him more of a cheater then the steroid abuser who hit 10 and was out of baseball in 5 years.

baseball turned its back on steroids, i cant blame all those players.  I look up to the ones that didnt do it, but baseball was letting it go by...  its just a tainted era, but calling everyone from it a scumbag is unreasonable.

by DSheppard on Jun 20, 2007 10:30 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Favorite players
That's the thing.  I really don't have any and I haven't since I was a kid.  I view players as commodities.  To be honest, I don't really care that Sosa is a scumbag as much as I do that he isn't a good player anymore.  I mainly posted this stuff to point out the hypocrisy of most fans.

by Chris Martin on Jun 20, 2007 10:34 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Do you want Botts instead of Sosa
Botts in 77 AB (not much granted has this)

AvG: .247
OBP: .333
SLG:  .338
Ops+ : 77

Sosa this year:

AVg: .241
OBP:  .298
SLG:  .338
OPS+: 92

Heck, give me Sosa.  I hope Botts is good, the Rangers need it...but honestly I like I said before I trust the Scouts and Daniels before I trust others.

by simbaa on Jun 20, 2007 10:44 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Scouts and Daniels
Aren't they the guys who put together the worst team in baseball this year?

Ouch.
Talk about slamming the door on a debate ....

by Athos on Jun 20, 2007 10:51 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

you are right
but then again if you have such crappy pitching coaches as Mark Conners what do you expect...yes that is also Daniels fault.....maybe Daniels should go by that theory.

However, and I hope for the best..but in the end if Botts were any good he would be in the Majors...Teams don't keep good players in the Minors..heck usually they promote them too fast....Sosa keep it going and make Adam post about 20 more comments about how you should be gone.

by simbaa on Jun 20, 2007 10:53 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Conner
I don't really fault him for this year.  The bullpen is still pretty good and I think that Loe, Tejeda, and McCarthy have been about what should be expected.  They are young guys with talent how have been inconsistent.  That happens.  Millwood has been bad but he's also been hurt.  I think the only guy that has not lived up to expectations and doesn't really have an excuse for it is Padilla but he's such a nutcase I can't really blame Conner for that either.

by ab03 on Jun 21, 2007 9:10 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Exactly !!
there were tons of players doing them back then so I guess they're all scumbags..LOL..Sammys on par to hit close to 30 homers and drive in 120 runs.. hitting 360 with runners in scoring position ..steriod free..give the man a break !
Who else could do better?  Botts? The man couldnt catch a ball if his life depended on it..thats why hes labeled a DH only candidate..thats sad and limiting..what the hell has he been doing in the minors all these years? hasnt learned to catch a damn ball yet.. why bother !
GayRangerFan

by RangerDisaster on Jun 20, 2007 10:39 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Yes
Botts could do better than Sosa has done this year.  Sosa has a 755 OPS and an OBP barely above .300.

If Botts can't do better than that, then the Rangers should put him on waivers, because he's a waste of a 40 man roster spot.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2007 10:41 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I agree
But Adam at the end of the day the Scouts see something they don't like (at least I believe or he would be here) and I think that is That Botts can't play in the Majors.  Heck he is fine for the Minors...we need guys to fill the ranks unless we have better replacements or hot prospects in his place so fine keep him there.

by simbaa on Jun 20, 2007 10:46 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Sammy is knocking in a LOT of runs..and doing an .
amazing job with runners in scoring position and even better with 2 strikes with runners in scoring position.. I think maybe all these OBP and OBS..may be well ..Oh B.S.lets not be guilty of being overly technical with the stats .. the bottom line is you want someone who knocks in runs..thats exactly what Sammys role is and hes done that exceedingly well.and he can catch a ball too..imagine that !!.. Botts will not hit no 360 with runners in scoring position..period ! Theres a VERY thick line between triple A and the Majors or he'd of been here already.. look at Nellie ..knocking the cover off the ball but sucking like mad up here...happens all the time.

He's played 16 games in the outfield this season.

He's been a DH who occasionally plays in right.

by Adam J. Morris on Jun 20, 2007 11:06 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

no there isnt a VERY thick line
look at how long a lot of AAAA guys have stayed around

look at guys in the past who have been seen as quad A players but have had it "click" -- guys like GMJ

theres a ton of guys who hang around forever shuttling btwn AAA and the majors

botts SHOULD have been called up before. end of story - to say anything else is foolish. to say that the scouts "didtn see what they liked" owuld mean that they should have released/traded him before now.

he needs to be in the majors. end of story.

by knockoutking24 on Jun 20, 2007 11:08 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I disagree
I think the scouts and GM (daniels and Hart before) hoped Botts would progress further and and least display that he should be up here...but in the end the there is a Thick LINE and he has not even measured up enough to warrant a look.
